How did Heart Hospital Patna start? Tell us about the journey.
Heart Hospital Patna was started with an aim of bringing the most advanced cardiac care to Patna and with a mission to make affordable and modern heart treatment available for all in the country. It was founded in 1994 by Bihar's leading cardiologist late Dr AK Thakur. The hospital so far has not only treated over 3 lakh patients but now it is serving as a leading tertiary heart care facility for patients from Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Nepal and neighbouring areas. The hospital is committed to make advanced cardiac care that meet global standards, affordable for all in Bihar and the country.
What are the challenges of patients in Bihar? How are you addressing them?
Earlier, medical facilities in Bihar were so meagre that heart patients had to go to other cities like Vellore, Delhi, Kolkata, etc in the hope of getting a new lease of life. Realising this, we initially took small footsteps and began as an indoor nursing home. Now with dedication and commitment, the hospital has become a pioneer in primary and normal angioplasty and the best cardiac care hospital in the region by serving for over 25 years.
Tell us about the best practices and technologies being implemented in the hospital.
I believe best medical practices with latest technology at affordable prices are the medicines for India's health challenges such as poor infrastructure, lack of resources, trained staff, burden on hospitals in metropolises and others. We have started regular CME workshops for cardiologists and conferences which are attended by renowned doctors across India and the globe to give maximum exposure to doctors of Patna and its peripheral areas. We are taking steps to make sure the best cardiac care that meets global benchmarks and best practices are available and affordable for the masses. We never focus on numbers but on value-based services. We want to infuse modern technology and affordability to find a solution to the existing health challenges and make healthcare accessible. We would continue treating needy patients or those who cannot afford treatments. We don't get any donations or grants from any organization, but we have several tie-ups with the state and central government to help the poor. The hospital regularly holds several workshops on ROTA - a complex angioplasty technique and the staff regularly attend conferences in various parts of India and abroad to keep themselves informed of the latest practices in modern cardiology.
Tell us about your achievements.
Today, the hospital is doing the maximum heart surgeries in the region by any private hospital at most affordable prices. It has performed many angioplasties, pacemaker implantations, bypass surgeries, valve replacement, etc. without compromising on quality treatment. Modern techniques have been practiced here for many years. Today, we have introduced a new method of pacemaker implantation which is only 3 years old in the world along with very complex and critical angioplasties like CTO and ROTA. In 2017 Asia one selected Heart Hospital Patna as the best super speciality from India in Bihar in tertiary care cardiology apart from many other awards and recognitions.
What are your future plans?
After over 25 years of experience and service, we can proudly say that today, we are leading in many areas of tertiary cardiac care. This success is a result of the combined efforts of our team of duty doctors, well trained & experienced consultants, nurses & paramedical, other medical staff and most importantly our patients. Going ahead, the hospital is boosting its infrastructure by adding more staff and beds in departments of pulmonology, nephrology and others, to meet the demands due to the rising number of patients in COVID as well as to provide best-in-class and affordable medical facilities to patients in Bihar.
