India has reported two deaths from a serious strain of influenza virus called H3N2. The two deceased persons have been reported from Karnataka and Haryana, respectively.

So far, the country has reported 90 cases of this virus. Moreover, 8 cases of H1N1, have also been detected so far.

The virus is thought to be more potent than other strains. "This virus may be more severe because, in the last three years, people were using masks extensively and this H3N2 could not enter the body. Hence, there was a lack of adequate antibodies to fight this. With reduced or no masks now, this virus is entering the world with already compromised immunity against it, people are facing the long-lasting effects of the virus,"said Dr. Rajkumar, Sr. Consultant- Internal Medicine, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre. 

The doctor further added that this compromised immune system may be the reason, and it is postulated that it is making people more vulnerable to viral infection.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines H3N2 as a non-human influenza virus that normally circulates in pigs and has infected humans (known as ‘swine influenza viruses"). The viruses that infect humans are called 'variant' viruses. The specific H3N2 variant virus was detected in 2011 in humans with genes from avian, swine, and human viruses and the 2009 H1N1 pandemic virus's M gene, as per CDC.

Symptoms to look for

Fever, respiratory problems including a cough and runny nose, as well as other symptoms like body aches, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea, are among the symptoms. Although some people may experience these symptoms for longer than a week, they typically last for a week.

"However, if the cough persists for over a week or is accompanied by other symptoms such as chest pain or difficulty breathing, it is crucial to seek medical attention. Pollution can exacerbate asthma, and the use of high-quality inhalers can aid in managing it. Lifestyle changes such as avoiding acidic or spicy foods and taking antacid medication if required can also assist in addressing acid reflux-related coughs," added Dr. Rajkumar.

Prevention And Treatment

Medication should be given as per prescription to those who have the H3N2 virus. Oseltamivir, zanamivir, peramivir, and baloxavir are currently advised medications and are only accessible with a doctor's prescription.

Annual flu shots and frequent hand washing are a couple of the safeguards to take, especially after using the toilet, before eating, and before touching your face, nose, or mouth. In addition, people should limit their interactions with those who are ill and keep aloof from overcrowding. Who is at higher risk?

Vulnerable Population

According to the CDC, individuals with certain long-term health conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart disease, weakened immune systems, neurological or neurodevelopmental conditions, children under the age of five, people 65 and older, pregnant women are at a higher risk of developing complications if they contract the virus.

"People who have underlying multiple health-related conditions or weakened immune systems are more susceptible to developing severe symptoms and may take longer to recover from the illness. In the last three years, the majority of people have been affected by COVID-19 variants, and its cascading effects can be seen in a compromised immune system along with other problems," said Dr. Rajkumar.
