Not long before was the nation caught in the grip of the much deadlier second wave of COVID-19. After the unlock process, a recent report on Monday, 12th July 2021 by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) stated that the third wave is inevitable and imminent. With 4 million people being vaccinated a day, we are still short by another 4 million per day to vaccinate all above age 18 within a year. While India is striving to meet the grappling shortages, many are seen without masks and not following the COVID-19 protocols.
The experts state that the third wave has set in already on 4th July and it is likely to peak in August. Recently, the AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria told the media that no data asserts that the pandemic will affect children. Yet, it is necessary to take all the precautions to safeguard them from infection. Masks will remain a simple yet powerful tool to protect them against contagion.
What are the right masks for children?
- A non-medical or cloth mask containing two or more layers of washable, breathable fabric is sufficient for children in generally good health. Ensuring that they wear the proper masks will protect them from the virus. Avoid masks made of fabric like vinyl that makes it hard to breathe for children.
- Parents should always ensure that the fabric mask provided to the child is of the correct size and not falling often. The suitable mask sufficiently covers the nose, mouth and chin of the child.
- Medical masks or surgical masks made of non-woven fabric usually are three-layered and designed for healthcare professionals. Children with underlying medical conditions should consult with their medical providers and wear a medical mask. Medical masks control the virus spread while protecting the wearer. It can also protect those at a higher risk of getting seriously ill from COVID-19.
- Ensure that the mask fits snugly on the sides of your child’s face without gaps.
- Your child should be able to breathe comfortably in the mask while walking briskly and talking.
- Children who are two years old or younger do not have to wear masks as they could suffocate.
- The right mask is the one that fits correctly and that your child will be able to wear when they need it.
- Children should be taught to wear the mask properly.
No single mask will work for children; therefore, it might require many trials and errors in finding a suitable mask for your child. However, it is imperative to not give up on the child if they refuse to wear masks. Decorate it with stickers or beads to encourage them to wear it.
Ensure your child wears a mask whenever they visit crowded areas or when they have company. Step out only during unavoidable situations. Educate your children on the importance of washing hands and make it mandatory to wash them after regular intervals. Ensure frequent washing of sanitizing of hands as children touch their face and eyes frequently.
