The third wave of COVID-19 is not far behind all of us. We all are entering the third wave. And some new symptoms of COVID-19 have emerged and are seen increasingly among the patients. Dry mouth, reduce hearing, severe headache, conjunctivitis are those new emerging symptoms among COVID-19 patients. 

So, let us understand some of the facts related to it.  

Symptoms 

A sudden decrease in hearing, dry mouth, throbbing headache and pink-eye known as conjunctivitis, are new symptoms detected increasingly in COVID-19 patients. Members of the Mumbai state government ordered various physicians to suspect the COVID-19 even if various hallmark signs are absent such as cough, sore throat, shortness of breath and cough in patients.

Global trends

According to various healthcare practitioners, there are quite fewer cases that had been observed to have sensorineural hearing loss connected with COVID-19. There is an inflammation of an auditory nerve or a clot caused by this viral infection. It affects the hearing in the same manner as that of the sense of smell. There is an aggressive increase in the cases of sudden hearing loss but the doctors are alerted as that is one of the side effects of the harmful virus. More than four crores death have been confirmed due to COVID-19, reported by World Health Organization (WHO) globally. 

What do health officials have to say

Dr Rahul Pandit, a member of COVID-19 taskforce stated, “conjunctivitis, extreme weakness, dry mouth, difficulty in hearing and reduces saliva secretion, long-lasting headache and skin are the signs of emerging Coronavirus too. This disease had been for more than 17 months, newer symptoms are still emerging and we all need to evaluate them.” 

Chairman of the task force Dr Sanjay Oak expressed, “During the second wave of COVID-19 which invites Delta variant showed only gastrointestinal symptoms which includes diarrhea, nausea and vomiting as well. Fever is also observed in varying forms in patients. Some patients might not get a fever while some get sudden bursts, some have a fever in intervals of two-three days while in most cases it completely subsides only to return with severity. The fever profile could be vastly varied in COVID-19 patients.”
